The musical project "OrClass" presented by MixiM is basically a fusion between classical chamber music and eastern folklore (Syria and the Balkans).  The five musicians are using instruments you rarely see together on the same stage and that creates a new sound and gives new life to old compositions.

The Luciano Berio piece "Folk Songs" are re-interpreted and mixed with new material and improvisation and the result is a new version of this famous composition. Most of the songs are folksongs from different places around the world that Berio re-composed to turn them into western classical music using his modernistic and very typical Berio sound. In this project the Orclass quintet develops it further and continues Berios dream of blending the to worlds together.   

 

Berios own comment:

"I have a utopian dream, though I know it cannot be realized: I would like to create a unity between folk music and our music — a real, perceptible, understandable conduit between ancient, popular music-making which is so close to everyday work and music".

The other part of this project follows the same ambition. The old baroque repertoar are in many ways a kind of art stuck in it's own form and interpretation and similar to the art we see in museums, beautiful and perfected in technique. With these new interpretations we are taking these masterpieces to our world that is filled with mixed cultures and influences from all over the world.
